Failure to Monitor Change in Condition

Boston Medical Malpractice Lawyers

Standing Up for Patients Who Were Harmed Because Their Doctor Failed to Monitor Changes in Their Condition

Whether you are hospitalized or being seen as an outpatient, it is important that the doctors, nurses and other medical professionals who are treating you effectively monitor your condition. When healthcare providers fail to carefully monitor your condition -while in the hospital, during pregnancy, after surgery, or in clinic visits - complications, injury, and even death can result.

At the Boston, Massachusetts, law office of Barry D. Lang, M.D. & Associates, our knowledgeable and skilled legal team stands up for the rights of patients who have been injured by doctor errors and medical mistakes of all kinds. Led by medical doctor and attorney Barry Lang, we seek compensation for the damages caused by medical malpractice, including negligent failure to monitor changes in a patient's condition.

Failure to Monitor and Treat Worsening Back Pain - Cauda Equina

The majority of people will experience back pain at some point in their lives. Back pain often resolves on its own or with physical therapy or medication. However when a back condition worsens medical evaluation is critical. Cauda equina syndrome is a rare but serious neurological condition which starts out like other back and spine injuries such as herniated discs. Early symptoms include low back pain, sore muscles and muscle weakness.

However, if a patient develops symptoms such as: severe pain; loss of bowel or bladder control (incontinence); trouble walking; or pain, numbness or weakness in the legs; your doctor should immediately investigate further. Diagnostic imaging studies, such as CAT scans and MRI scans together with physical examination are necessary to rule out compression of spinal nerve roots. Cauda equina is a surgical emergency. If surgery is not performed very quickly, permanent nerve damage usually results.

Failure to Monitor Pregnancy

When a patient is pregnant, it is especially important that doctors properly monitor her condition. Obstetricians are generally attentive to their patients' needs, but sometimes changes are overlooked or important tests are not run. If problems are not treated or monitored, the condition may then pose life-threatening problems for the fetus. The failure to test for gestational diabetes or failure to monitor blood glucose levels during pregnancy can cause problems during childbirth resulting in injury to mother or child.

Failure to Monitor Changes in Condition in Hospital or After Surgery

Admittance to a hospital allows medical staff to be especially attentive to a patient's condition. Though they have 24-hour access to the patient, nurses and doctors can easily miss changes in the patient's condition. Some changes can indicate a more serious problem, such as the extended absence of a bowel movement leading to a ruptured colon. Bedridden patients must also be monitored for pressure or bed sores which can become infected and drastically affect the patient. Following surgery, patients must be closely monitored for bleeding, infection and other complications.
