What is Traumatic Brain Injury?

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is typically a closed head injury where the brain is bruised or small blood vessels in the brain rupture or tear, causing bleeding in the brain, which in turn can kill brain tissue or cause permanent brain damage. Traumatic brain injury also includes the bruising, tearing, and swelling of the brain. Most often TBI is the result of an auto accident, or other accident where the head is struck, or tremendous force is applied to the brain (such as coming to a sudden stop, like a car or truck accident).
