Surgical errors that should never happen in Boston

According to Forbes Magazine, surgical errors happen more often than most people think. When admitted to a Boston hospital, patients can become victims of some medical malpractice events deemed so drastic that they have been labeled 'never events" because they simply shouldn't happen.

At the top of the list of 'never events" is having surgical equipment left inside a patient after surgery. This can result in excruciating pain, malfunctioning organs or even death. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to discover that a foreign object has been left behind until after a patient is already suffering from a worsened condition. An air embolism is another common surgeon mistake. This condition is caused whenever there is a gas bubble in a patient's vascular system. It results from air getting into the bloodstream during surgery or whenever it enters an IV line. This can result in a bubble of gas being trapped inside the heart thereby stopping blood flow from it.

Other common surgical errors include a collapsed lung, breathing failure, falls, blood clots and pressure ulcers. These mistakes are easily prevented and can result in life-altering injuries or even death if the proper precautions are not taken to ensure patient safety. To make matters worse, in order to correct these physician errors, hospitals sometimes charge patients for the medical treatment that's needed or attempt to make them pay for the instruments that have been left inside them.

No patient should leave a hospital in worse condition than when he or she entered, nor should they have to pay for treatment to correct physician errors. A medical malpractice attorney may be of help to those who have been affected by negligent operating room staff. An attorney may be able to negotiate a settlement with insurance companies and the hospitals in order to recover damages for their client.
