Horrified parents learn that doctor operated on child’s wrong eye

| May 9, 2011 | Surgical Errors

The parents of a 4-year-old boy with a wandering eye were horrified when they learned that the child’s surgeon performed a surgical error and operated on the wrong eye. The surgery was supposed to weaken the muscle at the bottom of the boy’s right eye because the muscle’s strength was causing it wander. The surgeon completely operated on the wrong eye before realizing her mistake. She then quickly operated on the other eye without informing the parents first.

“No parent, no child, nobody should have to live through the torture of that day,” the boy’s mother told ABC News.

The surgeon claims that she lost her sense of direction during the procedure. She blames a nurse who covered up the mark that the surgeon made on the boy’s right eye during surgery preparations.

The boy’s parents felt like they were kept in the dark about the mistake for too long. The boy’s mother said that a nurse came out during the surgery to tell her that they were operating on both eyes. The nurse failed to mention that the surgeon had operated on the wrong eye.

“I felt they were trying to cover it up at first,” the mother said. “I don’t know if that was because the doctor wanted to be the one to tell us, but from what they said, I felt like they were trying to hide something at the time.”

The boy’s right eye does not appear to be fixed according to the boy’s mother. The mother also said that the boy’s left eye has started wandering and that he has to wear dark sunglasses to protect his eyes.

The mother said that the boy is aware of the medical malpractice, but that he continues to enjoy his life.

“He’s a soldier though, going on like nothing happened,” she said. “He wants to run and play. He’s a 4-year-old boy, what can I say.”
