Malpractice concerns rise at Massachusetts plastic surgery clinic

| Aug 13, 2011 | Surgical Errors

The death of a Framingham woman has left a community wondering whether her death was the result of a surgical error at a local plastic surgery clinic. It is unclear whether the 39-year-old mother died from a breast implant surgery or a post surgery fall.

The woman moved to Massachusetts from Brazil nine years ago and rented an apartment that she shared with her three daughters.

“She was always working hard. On weekdays, she cleaned eight houses per day, and on Saturday she would clean offices,” her father said. He is a pastor at local Framingham church.

The woman’s father and one of her daughters helped carry her home on the day of the surgery because she was still drowsy. She then collapsed in a bathroom the next day and fell unconscious. She was pronounced dead after being rushed to a local hospital.

Reports indicate that the physician who performed surgery on the woman has been licensed for 15 years and has not had to pay medical malpractice claims for at least 10 years. He is also associated with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Columbia/MetroWest Medical Center. Many migrant Brazilian frequent the clinic for plastic surgery despite mixed reviews. One woman said the clinic botched her liposuction procedure and left her with an indentation in her leg which people confused with a car accident wound.

The Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine would not confirm yesterday whether or not it was investigating the physician and the Middlesex District Attorney’s office said that it was not investigating.
