Cost of medical malpractice lawsuits does not significantly increase healthcare costs

| Apr 30, 2012 | Uncategorized

Dozens of doctors at a conference in Cambridge hosted by the Lown Cardiovascular Research Foundation concluded that medical malpractice litigation is not a significant percentage of healthcare costs.  The actual cost is about eight days of annual spending for the insurance companies.

Doctors claim that the threat of medical malpractice claims make them practice what they call “defensive medicine,” ordering unnecessary testing and procedures to make certain they don’t miss anything.  In my opinion, this is exactly what they should be doing to insure that no harm comes to the patient.  This isn’t unnecessary testing but rather good medical practice.
