Woman claims pharmacy filled son’s prescription with wrong drug

| Oct 2, 2012 | Anesthesia & Medication Errors

Prescription errors can be an extremely serious matter. Such errors can have a variety of significant negative impacts on their victims.

Recently, a case has arisen in which prescription-related negligence has been alleged. The case is from New York. The case involves a woman who reportedly went to a pharmacy in New York to get a prescription filled for her son. The prescription was for a generic form of Ritalin called methylphenidate.

The woman alleges that the pharmacy accidently filled this prescription with the wrong drug. Specifically, she claims that instead of giving her methylphenidate, the pharmacy gave her methadone, a powerful painkiller.

The woman claims that this alleged prescription-related negligence caused her son to suffer harm. According to the woman, her son took the medication that the pharmacy gave and suffered a methadone overdose. The boy reportedly was hospitalized for a week in connection to the methadone overdose.

A lawsuit has been brought by the woman against the pharmacy in connection to these allegations of prescription-related negligence. The article on CBS New York’s website which reported this story did not mention what specific relief is being sought in this lawsuit. One wonders what will happen in this case and how it will ultimately be resolved.

Prescription-related negligence like that alleged in this case can be very harmful. Thus, one hopes that all pharmacists and pharmacies make sure to not act negligently when it comes to the filling of prescriptions. No individual should have to suffer harm because a pharmacist or pharmacy failed to act properly.
