Jury reaches decision in prescription negligence case

| Feb 4, 2013 | Anesthesia & Medication Errors

Prescription-related negligence can be a very serious matter. When a pharmacy acts negligently in connection to the filling of an individual’s prescription, it can result in prescription errors occurring (such as an individual being given the wrong medication). Such errors can be very harmful. No individual should have to suffer harm because a pharmacy acted negligently.

Recently, a jury reached its decision in a case that involved allegations of the above-mentioned type of negligence. The case was from Louisiana. The case involved a woman from New Orleans.

The woman alleged that a pharmacy in Louisiana acted negligently in connection to the filling of one of her prescriptions in June 2006. The prescription in question was for the high blood pressure medication, Toprol. The woman alleged that the pharmacy mistakenly put into the bag for her prescription a prescription bottle intended for a different individual that contained the anti-psychotic medication Zyprexa instead of a bottle containing Toprol.

Reportedly, the woman’s son picked up this prescription bag for the woman and the woman then took one of the Zyprexa pills. The woman alleged that taking this wrong medication caused her to suffer a stroke.

The woman brought a lawsuit against the pharmacy in connection to these allegations. The jury in this case recently reached its decision. The jury found the pharmacy to be 60 percent to blame for the woman’s stroke and awarded the woman a monetary judgment.

As the allegations in this recently decided case underscore, prescription-related negligence can cause significant harm to individuals. Thus, one hopes that all pharmacies make sure to act properly when filling prescriptions.
