Tewksbury man hospitalized with head injury

| Feb 22, 2013 | Traumatic Brain Injuries

On the evening of Feb. 5 in Tewksbury, a 67-year-old man was walking on Salem Road when he was struck by a car. The accident occurred near the Wilmington town line. Police report that the driver, a 24-year-old woman, stopped her car approximately 50 yards further down the road. Her speed at the time of the accident was not released.

Shortly after the accident, the man was flown to Boston Medical Center via helicopter for treatment of a serious head injury and other injuries. The man’s condition is unknown.

The driver declined medical treatment at the scene although an ambulance arrived to evaluate her. Police shut down Salem Road for approximately three hours while they investigated. The state police declined to comment on what may have caused the accident, and they did not indicate whether the driver would receive a citation because of the incident.

A driver who causes a car accident through carelessness or inattentive driving may be liable to any persons who are injured in the accident. Damages typically include medical bills, out of pocket expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering. A spouse of a person who is seriously injured in an accident may be able to recover for loss of consortium, which is damage to the relationship. If a person is permanently injured, damages can also include the cost of future medical bills. An experienced personal injury attorney is sometimes able to obtain a larger damages award than a person could get from negotiating without a lawyer.
