Medication errors can occur for a host of reasons

On Behalf of | Sep 4, 2016 | Anesthesia & Medication Errors

Doctors and pharmacists have a duty to ensure that they don’t provide patients with medications that will interact with one another in a way that leads to patient harm. They also have to make sure that they are prescribing medications to patients that will help the patient with their current medical issues. When doctors or pharmacists fail, patients can suffer.

It is important to note that patients also have a measure of responsibility here. The patient has to let the doctor know all of the medications they are taking. This includes other prescriptions, over-the-counter medications and natural supplements since all of these might interact with others.

We know that the thought of being harmed by the medication that is supposed to help you is troubling. If you find that you have been harmed by a prescription medication, you need to discover why the harm occurred. If the answer is because of an error made by your doctor or pharmacist, you might decide to seek compensation.

Besides drug interactions that could have been prevented, there are several other errors that can occur with medications. Being given an incorrect dosage or being given the wrong medication can be devastating. This can happen if the doctor writes the wrong information on your prescription or if the pharmacist doesn’t fill the prescription properly.

The use of electronic prescription writing has made it easier for pharmacists to fill prescriptions as intended by the doctor. If a handwritten prescription is used, you should make sure that it is legible before you leave the office. If the handwriting isn’t readable, consider asking for it to be written again. Anything you can do to stop an error from affecting you can help you avoid a possibly deadly error.
