Healthcare workers, learn about your risk of a violent attack

Because our law firm staffs both legal and medical professionals, we have a unique insight into the injury risks healthcare workers in Boston face. Some of these risks are somewhat common such as slips and falls or lifting injuries.

Sadly, assault and workplace violence have also become major risk factors for those who work in a medical setting. Many times, the victims of violence never see the risk until it is too late, and they have already suffered an injury.

We want all healthcare workers in Massachusetts to take these risks seriously. By learning about the risks and preparing yourself for possible violence, you will have a better chance of spotting escalation in a patient's behavior before he or she becomes violent.

The Sullivan Group offers these warning signs and risk factors to help you identify potential violence in time to protect yourself. Monitor patients for:

  • Extreme physical agitation
  • Lack of impulse control
  • Violent outbursts and displays of anger
  • Signs of acute psychosis or mania
  • Serious substance abuse issues
  • Signs of problematic head injuries
  • Legal issues in patients brought in by law enforcement

Although it is difficult if not impossible to spot danger in all of your patients, you can at least reduce your risks by staying alert to the indicators above.

We also want to make sure you understand that injuries caused by violence in the workplace are covered by your employer's workers' compensation insurance. Do not hesitate to file a claim if you suffer such injuries. You should take action immediately if you have difficulty with your claim.
