Mysterious worker death in Massachusetts hospital

| Jul 25, 2018 | Firm News

Recently, a man working at Emerson Hospital in Concord, Massachusetts, died while performing his duties. Reports indicate that he was discovered around 11:30 on the morning of his death inside a crawl space located on the hospital’s boiler system. At this time, authorities are calling the incident an industrial accident, but few details have been made available.

A press release issued by the district attorney’s office, the Concord police chief and the Concord fire chief indicate that the case will be sent to the medical examiner’s office to uncover a cause of death. Police officials say the death is currently an open case that is still undergoing investigation. According to the Middlesex district attorney, the victim’s death does not appear to be suspicious and as such, “no additional information will be released.”

Although the authorities say that the death is not suspicious, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is now investigating the incident in conjunction with police officials and the district attorney’s office. A regional director with the U.S. Department of Labor said it was too early to estimate when the investigation might conclude.

This death brings up many issues related to workers’ compensation. While it is unfortunately too late to help the victim that died in this incident, it is possible for the man’s family members to acquire death benefits through the worker’s compensation program.

Because it can be challenging for mourning family members to pursue these benefits, it may be wise to speak with an attorney. This can expedite the process, leaving survivors free to mourn their loss, Workers’ compensation attorneys can also handle many of the details required to pursue death benefits, lessening at least some of the stress and anxiety for bereaved family members.
