You can pursue workers’ comp for heat-related illnesses

On Behalf of | Jun 28, 2019 | Firm News

Now that summer has arrived, the temperatures will be getting even hotter as we head on into July and August. You may be longing for the cool sea breezes to be rolling in while you are toiling under the summer sun.

Working too many hours with too few breaks from the heat can sometimes lead to heat-related illnesses and injuries in those who work in the field of construction and other outdoor industries. Companies know or should know this and must take the steps to see that those working in the sun and heat get regularly scheduled breaks where they are able to cool down and rehydrate as needed.

If workers are not given these rest breaks in extreme temperatures, they run the risk of developing heat stress. That is the less lethal version of heat stroke that can quickly kill overheated workers.

What can you do if you are a victim of heat stress or heat stroke on the job? The most important thing to do is cool down immediately. Lowering your body temperature can save your life. But you still might be a very sick individual even after you have gotten cool.

In those situations, you may need to file a claim for workers’ compensation benefits to cover your medical costs, which could be expensive. You also may qualify to receive cash benefits for the time spent off the job recovering from your heat-induced illness or injury.

We can help you pursue your workers’ comp claim. Even if your company initially turns down your claim, that does not necessarily mean it’s the end of the line. We can appeal the decision for you and fight hard to get you the financial relief to which you’re entitled.
