Getting Medical Coverage For Your Work-Related Injury Or Illness

The most important benefit you receive from workers’ compensation in Massachusetts is almost always medical care. Without this coverage, your bills could quickly spiral out of control.

Under Massachusetts workers’ compensation laws, your employer’s insurance company is responsible for covering ongoing medical care related to your injuries, including:

  • Office visits
  • Surgeries and other treatments
  • Prescription medications
  • Rehabilitation
  • At-home or in-patient care
  • Prosthetics
  • Durable medical equipment (DME)
  • Nursing home or long-term care
  • Mileage associated with medical visits

Which Doctor Should You See?

Your employer may have a list of “preferred doctors” for you to see on the first visit. This list must be easily accessible and posted at your workplace. If your employer doesn’t make this list available to you, you can choose your own doctor. Likewise, after seeing a preferred doctor on your first visit, you are free to choose a different doctor for subsequent evaluation and treatment, so long as that doctor accepts your employer’s workers’ comp insurance.

What If I Need Additional Treatment?

You may feel that you still require medical treatment after being released by the workers’ comp insurance physician. You have a right to request an independent medical exam (IME) to determine the status of your health. If the IME concludes that continual treatment is required and the insurance company still denies coverage, we can help you pursue the benefits you need for your full recovery. Having an attorney is so critical to making sure your rights and best interests are protected.
